Review of the Year 2023

For the start of 2024, I will reflect on some of my experiences from 2023.
From binge-watching my favourite TV shows to catching the latest blockbuster movies at the cinema, my 2023 was filled with unforgettable moments. In this review, I will share my top picks for the best TV programmes, movies, and events of the year, as well as some personal highlights that made 2023 a year to remember.

Review of the Year 2023

Highlight – What one great thing happened to you this year.

I believe that Star Wars Celebrations is the ultimate convention for any fan. While any event in your hometown can be exciting, a convention dedicated to your favourite fandom is on another level. You can read about my experiences at SWCE in this blog post from last spring.

Surprise – Be it a TV show, film, or game that impressed you the most.

In 2023, two shows amazed me – Yellowstone and The Bear. I was more surprised by The Bear as it seemed to come out of nowhere. I read a few things about the show on social media last summer and decided to watch it. The next thing I knew, I was obsessing over a restaurant in Chicago and making the omelette

New Fandom – Did you gain a new obsession in 2022?

As I mentioned in my January 2023 round-up, I discovered my newest fandom every early on in the year. The Yellowstone franchise. So, I spend the first few months of the year getting to know the Dutton clan. My favourite programme from the franchise was 1883, I don’t know if that’s because it was the first one I watched or I just preferred that generation. But I will always have a soft spot for Elsa and her wild streak.

The Comeback Kid – Was one of your fandoms rebooted, re-released, or re-imagined.

I was lucky to see Stranger Things: The First Shadow stage show. As a fan of the Netflix TV show, I had high hopes for the live-action stage show. However, it went beyond my expectations. From the first scene, I was hooked. This prequel stage show proved that Stranger Things is a franchise going from strength to strength.

Still, going strong? – did one TV show have an amazing season? Or did a book series have a truly impressive release this year?

In the past, for this question, I answer either Stranger Things or The Mandalorian. However, as neither of these TV shows had a new season in 2023, I am a little lost for an answer. I did enjoy the newest season of Bad Batch, so I guess that is my answer.

Biggest disappointment of the Year.

Honestly, I am going to say Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. I always thought of the Ant-Man movies as a comedy movie in the Marvel franchise, and that humour was sadly missing from this movie. Instead, of dynamic, funny characters. Most of the humour seemed to be centred on a walking pink blob. The lack of humour, predictable storyline, meant it was a huge disappointment for me.

Event of the year – be it a convention, viewing party, geek girl brunch etc.

As I mentioned before, one of my highlights of the year was Star Wars Celebrations, this was also my event of the year. However, I also loved going on the Game of Thrones studio tour in Ireland (I will share my photos from this experience soon).

What are you looking forward to next year?

I have a milestone birthday in 2024 (more about that in future posts)forward to celebrating with my friends and family. Apart from that, I am looking forward to many new adventures in London and beyond.
